What are mandatory fees?

In addition to tuition, students pay several mandatory fees. Like tuition rates, mandatory fees must be approved by the Board of Regents. These fee revenues are earmarked for use within designated student support categories, not for general costs of instruction. Fee revenues support—and ensure that students have access to—facilities such as the Iowa Memorial Union, recreation centers, and the student health clinic. They also support the student bus service (Cambus), student access to information technology, career services, and the student-run newspaper. A full time undergraduate in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences paid just over $1,300 in mandatory fees in 2011-12. Detailed descriptions of each fee and its use can be found on the Mandatory Student Fees section of the Registrar's website.
